How to choose your classes
A trademark is registered against classes of goods and services, not your whole business. You pick the classes that cover what you actually sell or do.
Search using plain words for your products, like clothing, or your services, like accounting. These are plain-English starting points, not IP Australia's official wording. You choose what fits, and that is what gets filed. Pick the descriptions that genuinely match what you sell or do and you will be in good shape.
Your exact wording might not appear. Pick the closest match. It does not need to be word perfect.
Cover every class your brand trades in now. If you sell products and provide services, that usually means more than one class.
How pricing works
One class is $350, plus the $250 IP Australia fee for that class. Each extra class in the same application is $275, plus its own $250 IP Australia fee. GST applies to our fees, not to the IP Australia fees.
On a budget? Start with the classes that matter most to you. Some protection beats none.
You cannot add classes once an application is filed, but you can lodge another application any time to cover more. So it is worth getting the important ones in now.
